No. 34: Kathleen Sorbara
1960's style, Daichan, L-Theanine, Sunset Tower Bar and Force Majeure & Jeanne Dielman. 23 Commerce Quay, 1070 Brussels
Kathleen Sorbara is the New York & Los Angeles-based founder of the impeccably curated Chickees Vintage. The treasures I find at the women’s boutique and the menswear outpost around the corner are pieces I know I will love forever and ever – a Ralph Lauren satin off-the-shoulder top, a Miu Miu mini skirt that I imagine my daughter will one day beg to wear, and a Celine tank I wear probably 1x per week. She also carries vintage puzzles at the men’s store.. just good to know. From Kathleen –
I. a feeling
I recently watched two movies that explored the feminine experience very well — “Force Majeure” by Ruben Östlund and “Jeanne Dielman. 23 Commerce Quay, 1070 Brussels” by Chantal Akerman. I’ve been feeling a lot of concern and angst lately that feels particularly feminine, and I think these movies, the first which was released in 2014 and the second in 1975, articulate this (unfortunately) timeless feeling proficiently.
II. a meal
On the east coast and west coast, I’ve developed a soft spot for Japanese comfort food. In New York. I’ve been addicted to Sobaya in the East Village. In Los Angeles, Daichan has been a staple for me. Personally, I’ve been sick of spending $200-plus on mid-tier metropolitan meals — both of these establishments feel like the antithesis to the contemporary over-budget bistros that populate New York and LA.
III. a time period
There appears to be a flood of inspiration from the 1960’s in pop culture lately, and I’m loving it: Capote’s Swans, Marc Jacobs’s latest fashion show, the silhouettes of The Row’s latest lookbook, “Priscilla” by Sofia Coppola. This year, I’ve found myself putting a larger emphasis on styles and influences from this period when sourcing for the store.
IV. a supplement
I have crippling insomnia and anyone that knows me knows that I have had a really rough time around sleep the last few years. I enrolled in Parsley Health last year, which basically is a bridge between eastern and western medicine. My doctor suggested that I take L-Theanine before bed, and it has improved my sleep drastically.
V. a sunday night
The Sunset Tower Bar restricts its Sunday night service to hotel guests only— Recently my boyfriend and I booked a staycation at Sunset Tower. We had dessert at the bar (we prefer the left side of Tower Bar for dessert and an amaro!). The sundae menu at Sunset Tower is always a must, but on Sunday nights it feels particularly private and intimate. On our most recent trip, we dined in an empty Tower Bar, and the only other guests in the room were Julianne Moore and Todd Haynes, around the time of their Oscars PR cycle for “May December”.
