No. 06: Jack Platner
T Shirt Giveaway, Regal Pass, JBL Headphones, Neighborly Gifts, and the Honda Hobbit PA-50
Jack Platner is a brooklyn-based, malibu-born artist specializing in photography and sculpture. Last year Jack photographed over 500 staircases in malibu and released a book with many of them.. he so beautifully captures the charm, mystery, and uniqueness of each one. The first photo in the book of a large palm tree over a switchback staircase is one of my favorites. He also has many pieces that are photographed through a ceramic pinhole that he’s made himself – I love the motion in the photos he takes with it.
I. an act of kindness
I gave away a shirt that I loved and the person I gave it to lit up when she saw it. The graphic is dope, reminds me of a “Ken Price.” At that moment I knew I had to give her the “I survived the road to Hana” Tee. She actually did survive it and I’d never been so there’s that. My friend Pat gave me his old surfboard, a Stoker v-machine, which is an extraordinary thing for me to have as the amount of joy it will give me is insurmountable, and he said sure, have it, a true friend. He got these surfing feet off a soft top which I’d been riding for two years too long.
II. a regal pass
Regal Passes are $22 and you get unlimited movies. Something I’m still making a point to do is go see movies in the theatre where they are meant to be seen. There’s something to be said about watching a movie with a group of strangers.
III. a pair of wired headphones
Music with wired JBL headphones, sheesh, talk about noise canceling. I’ve never been more satisfied on a plane than watching a movie (definitely not regal) with my big cushy headphones. PS, buy a dongle for your phone :) I put wired in the title because my neurosis about bluetooth that close to my brain makes me a little weary. Cue answering a phone call and putting my phone up to my ear, whatever!
IV. a frame
An older woman with pink hair in Williamsburg saw us checking out some frames on the side of the street and they happened to be hers. She was them throwing out and we happened to catch her outside at that exact moment. She invited us up and we pulled more picture frames right off of her wall - big wooden frames, and some finer metal ones too. Who knew a frame for art with a little generosity from a neighbor and our walls start to sing.
V. a scooter
Oh man, where to begin, the Honda Hobbit PA-50 – scooter of dreams that I’ve never dreamt about. It goes fast, sounds like a lawn mower, gets me where I need to go in style and I don’t really need public transportation nor a bike, although I do love my bicycle. Navigating the New York streets can be sketchy but if done safely, there’s no corner of the city that won’t hear me rip roaring through it.
