No. 10: Grace Dougherty
Carven by Louise Trotter, Rira Objects bowls, Andrew Cranston, pb&j, and cord covers
Grace Dougherty is a Los Angeles-based writer, stylist, actor and overall chic lady. Her poetry about california & new york (and much more) is tender & honest.. it’s also made me laugh very hard. I recommend picking up a copy of her collection of poems “Tell Me About Heaven” at Mast & McNally Jackson in nyc and Despair in echo park.
I. a perfect collection
Louise Trotter made her debut as creative director at Carven last month at Paris fashion week. People are calling it the new Carven. I can't stop thinking about it. It was styled by one of my favorites, the mastermind Suzanne Koller, who knows exactly what she wants to say. And how appropriate for her to be here at the birth of Trotter at Carven, the perfect duo to tell us this new story. Admittedly, I had never heard of the 78-year-old brand before this, but I feel I discovered it at just the right time. The color palette and silhouettes of this collection are so thoughtful and feel like a woman created them with such particularity. Trotter says, “what I’m trying to work [toward] is a silhouette, a woman, a feeling”. A feeling. Aren’t we all working towards that? I can’t leave out the brilliant hair and makeup done by Paul Hanlon and Lauren Parsons. I need a plethora of barrettes immediately, and yes I have been growing my hair out.
II. a pretty bowl
These bowls by Rira Objects are so gorgeous, but a pretty penny. I just moved into a new home and am slowly curating things for my kitchen and living room. These ones keep coming to mind. They will definitely be on my wishlist this holiday season. I love my fruit bowls, and this one is the ultimate.
III. a scottish artist
I went on a deep dive of Andrew Cranston after seeing this painting that was just on view at Karma in Paris. When you zoom into it, you’ll always find something new. I have an aversion to pink in my wardrobe, and most things besides when it shows up in the sky in the early morning and evening, but I love his use of it here. You can read more about Cranston here in the Paris Review, Issue 239 for which he did the cover. A perfect desk in a green room. I love when things make me fall more in love with Los Angeles like this painting did. The title “There’s A Fog Upon LA” an instant nod to Blue Jay Way by the Beatles. Putting together this equation evoked such a feeling of nostalgia. It’s June, it’s early morning (about 7), I’m in the Palisades, this song is playing. Finally, I crack a window.
IV. a sandwich
When God made women he said sugar, spice, and everything nice, but also make them suffer and think about what they're going to eat for dinner at 10 am. For once, I want to know peace. Fortunately, for me (and you) there is such thing as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We forget! We forget this remarkable delicacy exists. It is a children’s game, this sandwich; easy for your mother to pack in a paper bag lunch. However, I highly recommend it for adults. Skippy or Jif creamy peanut butter makes it best. Really slather it on there. I love it with Bonne Maman raspberry preserves and if you’re in a crazy mood, then you can add a smiley face like me.
V. a disguise for the eye sore
I recommend the Iko Iko Space cord covers to everyone. They are the perfect thing to turn any hideous cord into something incredibly chic. I had a housewarming party recently and I thought about stowing away my heinous electric toothbrush, and then I remembered I had this. Instantly it's fabulous, and I want everyone to look at it. I’m also a fan of Kristin’s other work, especially these extravagant pillows. I had the pleasure of seeing a number of them featured in the show last winter “Substance in a cushion” at the Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery in Tribeca.
