No. 26: Brooke Callahan
Ryan Bush & Raphael Martinez Cohen, Transmission, Kettl's Soba Cha Tea, Underwater Moonlight and the color yellow
Brooke Callahan is a St. Louis-born, Los Angeles-based clothing and jewelry designer. Her clothes are colorful (and therefore give me the same color-picking anxiety akin to ordering new sheets / towels) but that’s why I love it all. She color-swatches everything and all of the tops, bottoms and dresses are mix & matchable. I’m dreaming of affection archives maroon pants… Brooke wasn’t opposed. Beyond swatches and stitches, it’s important to note her favorite turkey sandwich is from Cookbook. God bless another turkey sandwich lover. With love from Brooke –
I. an artist duo
I can’t really remember when I stumbled upon the artistic duo Ryan Bush & Raphael Martinez Cohen -- most likely around the time I was sourcing terrazzo style jewelry and had just come back from Italy. I fell in love with their whimsical subjects and perfect use of color. Their work is mainly terrazzo and much of it is functional -- their tables often being my favorite pieces. I think they once did an entirely terrazzo lobby floor…. ultimate dream for my own home… one day….
II. a book
I did PR for A.P.C. when I lived in New York; it was my first real job and really changed everything about the way I approach design. They released a book a few years ago called Transmission which chronicles the brand's 30ish year history -- I pick it up every few months and read it cover to cover -- it reminds me how much I love what I do.
III. a perfect cup of tea
In a horrid turn of events I’ve recently had to cut out caffeine -- I thought my life was over until I tried Kettl’s Soba Cha tea. It's super savory and way different than any other teas I’ve tried -- the toasted buckwheat flavor has this little bit of sweetness that is hard to explain but so so good. It’s a much better alternative to coffee than camomille, which I had been drinking before, and is so depressingly boring. I now buy the tea in 100 packs and recently branched out and also purchased some Houjicha bags. A few shops, such as Proof in Atwater, have Houjicha lattes and they are my most favorite treat. I’m actually drinking one as I write this :)
IV. an album
I’m always on the hunt for the perfect LA driving music. It’s a bit of a hard to define genre, but when you hear it you know! Underwater Moonlight by The Soft Boys is a perfect example, it's the kind of music you want to whip around Moholland drive blasting. Some other honorable mentions would be Read, Writing and Arithmetic by the Sundays, Something/Anything? By Todd Rundgren or pretty much any Steely Dan. I can only play CDs in my car, so I’m a frequent at Counterpoint Records in Hollywood and Jackknife in Atwater -- you can also get pretty much anything on ebay for $5.
V. a favorite color
Yellow is all I want to wear right now -- it absolutely washes me out/does nothing for me but it's COOL which is the only thing that matters. I love the way a yellow tee looks popping out under a dark sweater -- it's such a divisive color that it really has the power to define an outfit even if you just see a bit of it. My favorite color of the Tie pants has always been the yellow and I will absolutely be making more pieces for Spring in a buttery hue. I also think yellow is perfect in the home; I’m finally ready to pull the trigger on a Le Creuset which will be yellow, of course.
