No. 27: Yours Truly
The Taste of Things, Les Dormeurs by Sophie Calle, The American Fabric Magazine, a love note and a Bode dress
Hellooo from Phoenicia, NY! Leila & I are having a slow week at Dylan & Coco’s 1840s riverside house with carrot ginger soup from Migliorelli Farms, Sana buckwheat tea, this Sam Prekop album front to back, zero cell service and lots of rain. Reflections from the week —
I. a movie
The other day I went to the cozy Cobble Hill Cinema to see The Taste of Things. It was one of the most beautiful films I’d seen in a while. In short, it’s a love story between two chefs set in late 19th century France starring the always-perfect Juliette Binoche. I savored the slowness of their romance, the sweet dialogue (can you tell I’m such a damn sucker???) and the sensorial pot-steaming-with-stew visuals. When I stepped out of the theater on a Saturday night in new york city, the urge to speedwalk the chilly walk home dissolved; I wanted to meander. Let it all simmer.
II. a series
Between April 1 and April 9, 1979, French photographer Sophie Calle invited 29 people — friends / the neighborhood baker / etc. — to sleep in her bed.
"I asked people to give me a few hours of their sleep. To come and sleep in my bed. To let themselves be looked at and photographed. I took photographs every hour. I watched my guests sleep" – Sophie Calle, Les Dormeurs (Sleepers) 1979
The series has 176 photos. I love the intimacy and vulnerability of her photography — each guest she photographed evokes something a bit different for me..
III. a magazine
Last weekend Carter (friend of the newsletter— can I steal that from HLG??) and I went to High Valley Books. I sat in the owner Bill’s basement reading a book about parties in New York from 1930, Purple magazines and a 1992 Beverly Hills city directory.
But the first collection of magazines I picked up inspired me most — The American Fabric Magazine. It was a lavish textile magazine that ran from 1946 until 1986 and was created as a guide for fashion designers & manufacturers. The themed issues included physical samples, interviews with designers and the covers were usually done by notable artists (the one on the right by Salvador Dali).
IV. a sweet reminder
While at the store, Bill showed me this note he found in a book.. xxxooo Miss Honey <3 He finds a lot of treasures within the treasures at his shop.
I’m quick to send a loving text.. words of affirmation is my love language.. but I’m going to try to remember to pick up a pen and my chic stationery because the rush of finding sweet notes is priceless.
V. a dress
I can’t shake this Bode lace dress from my mind.. it’s so elegant. The always chic Alexa Chung wore it recently with the buttons unclasped.. I’m into so it.
